An orally administered product of this mussel has can be used to naturally treat arthritis, pain and degenerative joint disorders (DJD) in dogs, cats and horses (people too). Other benefits for Perna mussel include reduced inflammation and improved connective tissue elasticity. Given orally as a nutritional supplement, Perna has been proven to show beneficial improvement in the area of degenerative joint disorders and problems associated with aging in the dog, cat and horse.
The Green Lipid, Perna canaliculus is a marine bivalve mussel produced commercially in New Zealand. Analysis of the Perna mussel shows that it is approximately 60% protein, 25% complex carbohydrates, and% 2 to 4% fat. It also contains a broad spectrum of natural vitamins, chelated minerals, and nucleic acids. Approximately 10% of the complex carbohydrate is present as GAG.
Published work from nearly 22 years ago has shown the Perna mussel to be beneficial in treating arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Two major studies conducted in Scotland and France used human patients suffering from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, to demonstrate the Perna mussel's effectiveness in this area. In one study involving 86 patients with arthritis (31 osteoarthritis and 55 rheumatoid arthritis), the results were, 67% of the patients received significant benefit after 3 months. In a second study involving 53 patients with radiologically confirmed osteoarthritis of the knee, 40% of the subjects showed major improvement. Areas of improvement in both studies included reduced pain and inflammation and greater joint mobility. Other areas of possible use include inflammatory skin conditions, low sperm motility, and degenerative conditions related to aging, Anecdotal reports by many practicing veterinarians suggest clinical efficacy in treating degenerative joint diseases and connective tissue disorders in horses and dogs.
Several studies have linked the Perna mussel's anti-inflammatory effect to the presence of certain protein structures. The Perna mussel contains biologically active agents, including the GAGs and an antihistaminic substance.
Earlier studies have shown the Perna mussel to contain an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis; this may also help to explain the observed anti-inflammatory effect.
Recent work has confirmed the potential benefits of the Perna as an anti-inflammatory agent. The study shows that Perna mussel has the potential to reverse the degenerative process of rheumatoid arthritis in mice and rats. The study demonstrated that a daily intake of Perna mussel suppressed the development of arthritis in the collagen II-induced model as well as reduced the severity of the inflammation in those animals already afflicted with the disease. One group of mice showed a 50% to 60% reduction in the severity of inflammation compared with that of the control group.
The exact mechanism of the way Perna mussel works in controlling and preventing arthritis in laboratory animals has not been clearly shown. The unique combination of complex proteins, GAGs, amino acids, nucleic acids, and naturally chelated minerals may work to give a synergistic, biologic effect that helps repair articular cartilage and prevent deterioration. Earlier material on the value of GAGs in the area of degenerative joint disease is relevant to this. The Perna mussel may enhance the regenerative capabilities of the chondrocytes that regulate and produce the chondroitin sulfates and hyaluronic acid needed by the joint and connective tissue. The product appears to improve joint lubrication, ease joint pain, and improve mobility and range of motion in the affected joints.
