Carbo Veg. is a homeopathic remedy for the ability to reverse near death states of utter collapse. This has earned Carbo Veg. the characteristic title of the 'corpse reviver'. The state of collapse is where this remedy proves its value; animals in traumatic shock, septicemia - blood poisoning caused by bacteria or other toxins or a decreased volume of circulating blood (hypovolaemia, colic in horses, instances where the liver or kidney shut down, can all precipitate the Carbo Veg. state. There is coldness in the animal, gasping, air hunger, mental and physical inactivity, lack of circulation and bluish skin and gums (cyanosis). There may also be pale mucus membranes in the inner linings of the eyelids. The animal seems to weak to hold out. Animals who never fully recovered from the effects of some previous illness.
Carbo veg. can be a life-saver in asthma attacks or any other condition where there is shortness of breath and a suffocating feeling. Wheezing and rattling of mucus in the chest. Hemorrhage from the lungs. Neglected pneumonia. In the Carbo state, labored breathing is ameliorated by sitting up. Consider this remedy in pet rats with mycoplasma phenomena, during respiratory distress.
For the layperson Carbo vegetabilis is most often used to treat digestive disturbances where there is severe bloating (above the navel), foul smelling belching and passing of gas. The simplest food distresses. Digestion is slow; food putrefies before it digests. Burning in the stomach.

Sense of weight, as in the head, eyes and eyelids, before the ears, in the stomach, and elsewhere in the body; putrid (septic) condition of all its afflictions, coupled with a burning feeling.
The tongue may be coated white or yellow brown, covered with aphtha. Teeth sensitive when chewing; gums retracted and bleed easily. Blood oozing from gums when cleaning teeth. Pyorrhea.
Peculiarly, to the extreme coldness of the body which Carbo-V exhibits, the patient is ameliorated by fanning; similarly, it resents being covered and will attempt to throw off blankets. There may be oozing of dark blood from wounds or any body orifice. The pulse is weak to the point of being imperceptible and the pet may tremble or shiver.
Homeopathic vegetable charcoal, today is made from Beach, Poplar or Silver Birch but according to the purists only Beech should be used. This is because originally the remedy was proven by Hahnemann and he used Carbo-V. prepared from Beach wood in the proving.
Part used and extraction:
Beech logs the thickness of a man's arm are stripped of bark and then cut into three inch lengths which are then heated until they are red hot, glowing embers. The embers are then sealed in an airtight container (traditionally an earthenware jar).
Through the ages the ability of charcoal to absorb gasses and toxins even when ingested has secured it a place in folklore medicine and even today charcoal tablets are prescribed in conventional medicine for flatulence and poisoning. Every tropical or marine fish enthusiast know that charcoal filters are best for removing toxins and gasses retained in aquarium water.
