Vitamin B6 seems to be a common feature in many seizure patients. The dose for B6 for dogs is 25 milligrams for small dogs, about 50 milligrams daily for the average-size dog and 100 milligrams daily for large breed dogs.
Also increase the dogs vitamin B3 level. 25 milligrams for small dogs, 50 milligrams for an average dog and 100 milligrams for a larger animal. Niacinamide, one of the common forms (non-flushing) of B3 seems to be extremely helpful in combating the problem. There have been many reports of dogs never having another seizure after only a week of therapy. In humans it is used to treat schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and age-related loss of thinking skills, chronic brain syndrome, depression, dizziness, motion sickness, and fluid retention (edema).
It's long been known that a deficiency of vitamin B6 or any interference with its function can cause convulsive seizures in any mammalian species, including man and dog.Conventional Drug Therapy
Dogs suffering grand mal, the more severe form of seizures, will need central nervous depressant drugs in the beginning. These drugs have no curative properties but will act to sharply reduce the degree of seizures. It will also make the dog despondent and listless. Unfortunately, another feature is that in many dogs these drugs loose there effectiveness over time and cease to work.
The objective here, would be to put the dog on a supplemental program (such as this one) for one month, then with the help of your veterinarian 'very slowly' wean the dog off of the drugs. You may just find, that with the supplements you can stop the drug or significantly reduce the dose. The benefit is a dog that is functioning at 100 percent again, minus the depressant drugs.Magnesium and Manganese
Magnesium helps the body absorb calcium, vitamin C, E, and B complex and is important to the health of the nervous system. Convulsive seizures have been observed in dogs fed a magnesium-deficient diet. The daily magnesium dosages for dogs are: 10 mg. for small dogs. 20 mg. for medium dogs, 50 mg. for large dogs and 75 mg. for giant breeds.Vitamin C
