For nutritional management of dogs while loosing weight.
1/4 lb. ground round or other lean beef
1/2 cup cottage cheese (un-creamed)
2 cups of softly cooked carrots, chopped
2 cups of cooked green beans, finely chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons dicalcium phosphate*
Sauté the beef in a skillet, stirring until lightly cooked; pour off fat and cool. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Add the daily vitamin just prior to serving.
Keep covered in the refrigerator. Warm left overs just to room temperature. Do not heat in a microwave oven. Yield: 1 3/4 lb.
Right Before Feeding, into the portion to be fed for that meal, stir in the supplements below.
A daily whole food Vitamin-Mineral Dog Supplement which fulfills the canine minimum daily requirement for all vitamins and trace minerals. Follow dosing instructions on the product label.
Protein: 5.5 %
Metabolizable Energy: 220 Kcal per pound.
Snacking and scavenging should be absolutely forbidden during the reducing period. However, since many obese dogs are accustomed to begging (and receiving) an occasional tidbit of raw vegetable (carrot, etc.) will add only roughage, vitamins and minerals, not appreciable calories. Taking your pet for extra walks is a healthy treat too.
* Dicalcium Phosphate Sources: Drug and health food stores; Substitute = Bone Meal (tested free of lead). This is an important supplement as it will balance the phosphorus and calcium ratios from lack of real bone with the red meat in the diet.
