Nutritional Supplements for Cats with Cancer

The best sources of omega-3 fatty acids — eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for cats are derived from fish oils of cold water fish (salmon, trout, or most commonly menhaden fish).

In research studies using induced tumor models, omega-3 fatty acids reduced tumor development. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to inhibit tumor growth as well as the spread of cancer (metastasis.) Reduced ratiation damage in the skin was also seen following supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids.

The use of omega-3 fatty acids can promote weight gain and may have anticancer effects, and also improves the immune status, metabolic status, and clinical outcomes of cancer patients . In animal models, the omega-3 fatty acids shows anti-wasting effects, so it helps to maintain weight and discourages muscle loss.

Dose: The cat dose is typically 1/6 to 1/10 of the human dose, mixed into food or a treat. Start with just a few drops and allow the cat to adjust to the supplement slowly. Slowly add a few more drops over several days until you have reached the maximum dose for your cat.

Recommendations:

Norwegian Salmon Oil is extracted only from salmon found in the deep, unpolluted waters of Norway.

Carlson's Norwegian Salmon oil contains oil extracted from salmon and other fish; Sardine, Anchovy and Mackerel which gives it a higher EPA and DHA potency.

Their product is regularly tested (using AOAC international protocols) for freshness, potency and purity by an independent, FDA-registered laboratory and has been determined to be fresh, fully potent and free of detectable levels of mercury, cadmium, lead, PCB's and 28 other contaminants.
