Homeopathic First Aid

Food and Garbage Poisoning

Arsenicum album

This is the homeopathic remedy that comes first alphabetically and first in effectiveness. This is almost always the first choice for food poisoning. It is also quite successful for people, and the results are usually dramatic. The patient needing this remedy will often have diarrhea and nausea or vomiting at the same time. They may be quite ill, even fearful that they are severely ill and may die, they will also be very restless. These are strong keynotes in the materia medica for choosing Arsenicum.

Dosing example: Use Arsenicum in 30c potency. Dose the remedy every 15 to 30 minutes for up to 4 doses. Then give the remedy every 2-4 hours until improved.

Carbo Veg.

These patients are more severely affected in that they may become cold and weak, to the point of collapse. The animal usually has severe, foul smelling gas as well. They often develop dry heaves. This is a severe state and if you do not see rapid improvement within a few doses, you should seek veterinary assistance.

Carbo vegetabilis 30c. Dose every 15 to 30 minutes for up to 4 doses. Then every 2-4 hours until improved.

Nux vomica

Nux-V is a good choice for any toxic condition and food poisoning is certainly toxic. Consider this remedy if the animal becomes fidgety and irritable as the condition arises. Diarrhea with straining is a common factor, and the pet often continues to strain after emptying the bowel. Retching may occur as well, often without producing vomitus material. Rich food, too much food or garbage raids may bring about this condition.

Dosing Example: Nux vomica 30c or 200c. Dose every 15 to 30 minutes for up to 4 doses. Then every 2-4 hours until improved.

Veratrum album

Veratrum is a similar state to that of Arsenicum album, though somewhat more severe. There may be coldness and weakness along with the persistent nausea and vomiting. Usually there is not the excessive gas as with Carbo veg. Vomiting and diarrhea together is the indicator here. If arsenicum does not work, this is often the second choice.

Dosing Example: Use Veratrum album in a 30c potency. Dose every 15 to 30 minutes for up to 4 doses. Then every 2-4 hours until improved.

Crotalus horridus

The vomiting here is violent and persistent. The affected animal may vomit blood or material that looks like coffee grounds. Unless you are absolutely positive that you are dealing with food poisoning as the culprit do not wait too long. If you don't see marked improvement head for your veterinarian.

Dosing Example: Use Crotalus in a 30c potency. Dose every 20 to 30 minutes for up to 4 doses. Then every 2-4 hours until improved.
